Course Description:

This course is an educational program held by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH). The program is for Infection Preventionists (IPs) and associated staff who work in acute health care settings, including general acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, dialysis centers and ambulatory surgery centers. The course is adapted from California Department of Public Health’s “Basics of Infection Prevention” course and intended for beginning and intermediate IPs. It is free to attend and those who attend both days are eligible for nursing CEUs (approximately 10).

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the most important care practices for preventing Multiple Drug Resistant infections (MDRO), infections due to new emerging pathogens and device-related infections.
  • Discuss epidemiology, microbiology, and surveillance as it pertains to infection prevention personnel.
  • Discuss how to build and sustain an infection prevention and control program, especially through competency-based training and audit and feedback.
  • Discuss methodology for developing an amicrobial stewardship program with the collaboration of all stakeholders.

  • Beginning and Intermediate infection prevention professionals.
  • Staff with infection prevention responsibilities.
  • Clinical staff with an interest in infection prevention.
  • Quality improvement staff, administrators, or managers, chairpersons of Infection Prevention Committees, interested in learning more about infection prevention strategies.

This course is focused on acute care settings. The next long-term care course will be in April 2019.

***Note this is a 2 day course and all attendees are expected to attend for the full 2 days from 8am to 4:30pm.
